However, in 1907, the direction of his life changed dramatically when François Coty gave him a modest commission to design unique lettering for use on Coty perfume labels. This initial project was quickly followed by René Lalique’s designing a glass plaque for the Coty perfume “L’Effleurt,” then creating in 1909 the flacon for “Cyclamen”, another Coty perfume, and rapidly accepting assignments from many other perfumers.
Completely revitalized by the new horizons offered by the perfume industry, René Lalique embarked enthusiastically upon his second career, becoming the greatest glass artist and industrialist of the 20th century. His innovative creativity revolutionized the perfume industry, and elevated the presentation of perfume, cosmetics and beauty products to the level of an art form.
René Lalique was unfettered by accepted conventions, and he would continue to introduce new concepts throughout his long and productive life, based upon his artistic genius, coupled with his technical brilliance. He also possessed an innate instinct to anticipate trends, and could modify his style, without ever losing the uniqueness of his vision.
